The event will focus on prominent ethical issues in the context of copyright, data collection and use of translated works.
The first theme of the Event, Ethical Issues in Translating Indigenous Languages, will aim to focus on the inherent sovereignty that Indigenous communities have over knowledge and data that comes from their lands, territories, and waters, highlighting the impact of new technologies and business models on translation of Indigenous languages.
The second theme, Translation and Interpretation: Ensuring Cultural and Linguistic Access, will focus on the matter of right to linguistic access and legal aid for both Indigenous communities and translators/interpreters.
The event will provide an in-depth view of the Meta/UNESCO partnership announcement for the project “No Language Left Behind”.
Program Objectives
The online event will:
- Focus on ethical issues around copyright and data collection while translating Indigenous languages.
- Act as conversation starter for moral and social responsibility of language experts towards Indigenous communities.
- Highlight practical, cultural and legal challenges faced by translators, on and off the field.
- Focus on moral and material rights of both Indigenous communities and translators.
- Focus on Indigenous communities’ rights to cultural and linguistic access.
The online event will be live-streamed on the Translation Commons YouTube channel. In addition to our main programme on 30 September 2024, a social media campaign will be active during the month of September 2024 to acknowledge the role of translators and interpreters working with Indigenous languages.
Speakers will be representatives from Indigenous Peoples Organizations, academia and other public and private organizations working with Indigenous Peoples and language professionals from all over the world.
This online event is organized within the context of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (2022-2032), which was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in December 2019. Bringing together a diverse range of stakeholders, including linguists, members of the Global task Force for Making a Decade of Action for Indigenous Languages, artists, activists, interpreters, and more, this event aims to foster meaningful dialog on these crucial topics. Students, educators, and policy makers are all encouraged to attend.
