About Translation Commons

Translation Commons is a nonprofit public charity dedicated to providing a reliable and scalable method for digitally rendering languages. Our mission is to solve the problem of unrepresented languages struggling to participate in a global communications network, and since 2015, we have successfully helped digitize numerous endangered languages.

Position Description

Translation Commons is seeking a creative and versatile Multidisciplinary Graphic Designer (Volunteer) to join our Marketing Team and help strengthen how our mission is communicated visually across digital and print channels.

The ideal candidate is comfortable working across multiple areas of design—from branding and social content to campaigns, presentations, web graphics, and light motion or video. You will collaborate with the Marketing Team to translate ideas and complex information into thoughtful, engaging visual communications for a global audience.

This is an opportunity to contribute your creative expertise to meaningful international work while developing a diverse body of work across brand, digital, campaign, and nonprofit communications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design visual assets for social media, digital campaigns, newsletters, websites, presentations, reports, events, and other communications.
  • Develop creative concepts and visual directions for campaigns and key Translation Commons initiatives.
  • Translate campaign ideas and messaging into cohesive visual systems across multiple channels and formats.
  • Create social media content, including static graphics, carousels, infographics, and short-form visual content.
  • Design and adapt digital assets for web pages, email communications, and newsletters.
  • Support the development and evolution of Translation Commons’ visual identity while working within established brand guidelines.
  • Create presentation templates, pitch materials, informational graphics, and other branded communications.
  • Edit and adapt existing video footage into short-form content for social and digital platforms.
  • Create simple motion graphics or animated assets when appropriate.
  • Develop print or event-related materials as needed, including signage, posters, informational materials, and promotional assets.
  • Collaborate with Marketing Team members to brainstorm creative approaches for campaigns, events, and organizational initiatives.
  • Help maintain visual consistency and a high standard of design across Translation Commons communications.
  • Organize and prepare design files and templates so they can be efficiently used by other members of the organization.

Desired Skills and Experience

We welcome designers with multidisciplinary experience and do not expect every candidate to have expertise in every area listed below.

  • Strong graphic design skills with a portfolio demonstrating thoughtful visual communication.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign; experience with Canva or similar platforms is also valuable.
  • Experience designing across a range of formats, such as brand, social media, digital campaigns, presentations, web, email, or print.
  • Strong understanding of typography, layout, hierarchy, color, composition, and brand consistency.
  • Ability to take a creative brief or idea and develop it into a polished visual solution.
  • Experience working with brand guidelines and established visual identities.
  • Familiarity with Figma or other digital design tools is a plus.
  • Motion graphics, animation, or video editing experience is a plus.
  • Experience creating infographics or translating complex information into accessible visual content is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Comfortable collaborating with marketers, writers, volunteers, and other cross-functional team members.
  • Interest in language preservation, cultural representation, accessibility, digital inclusion, or nonprofit work.

What You’ll Gain

  • The opportunity to contribute creative work to an international nonprofit with a meaningful global mission.
  • Experience designing across a wide range of creative touchpoints rather than working within a single design discipline.
  • Opportunities to develop campaign, branding, digital, social, and communications work for your portfolio.
  • Collaboration with an international community of professionals, volunteers, and language advocates.
  • The ability to help shape how Translation Commons communicates its mission and impact visually.
