Position Description

Translation Commons is a nonprofit public charity dedicated to providing a reliable and scalable method for digitally rendering languages. Our mission is to solve the problem of unrepresented languages struggling to participate in a global communications network, and since 2015, we have successfully helped digitize numerous endangered languages.
Translation Commons is looking for a creative and motivated leader to take up the volunteer position of Program Manager. Each group has two managers working in conjunction with each other to establish and manage a team of volunteers to fulfill the functions of the Program Management Group. This is a great opportunity for you to contribute to an international volunteer organization and to share your expertise. The Program Manager is responsible for managing Translation Commons’ language-focused program.This program creates a global impact through resource creation and research. Through this position, you will learn the inner workings of the programs department of a non-profit organization focused on languages. This role will help you pursue careers in program and project management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Organization: Organize and manage the various projects within your assigned program (e.g., resource creation, training materials, tools, and community building).
  • Stakeholder Liaison: Act as the main point of contact and liaison between experts, communities, advisors, vendors, and other Translation Commons teams to define requirements and streamline processes.
  • Leadership and Delegation: Lead and coordinate meetings, delegate tasks to program volunteers, and manage diverse project responsibilities (which may include online event organization, technical documentation, or social media efforts).
  • Documentation Owner: Act as the owner and central custodian of all documentation related to the program.
  • Reporting: Share progress, updates, challenges, and needs with the Program Management Group Managers and Advisors.
  • Deliverables: Be ultimately responsible for the successful execution and deliverables produced by the program.
  • Sponsorship: Assist in gathering sponsors for the project/program, as needed.
  • Frameworks: Work with group advisors to develop and improve operational frameworks and communication channels.

  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills, coordination, and liaison abilities, with the capacity to lead meetings effectively.
  • Initiative: A forward-thinking, “go-getter” attitude with the ability to take initiative, identify problems, and use creativity to develop new goals and solve challenges.
  • Technical Skills: Adequate technical skills for G-suite collaboration.
  • Visionary Outlook: A strong sense of the program’s contribution to Translation Commons’ overall mission.
  • Commitment: A weekly commitment of at least 5–10 hours is required.
