Position Description
Translation Commons is looking for a forward-thinking leader to take up the volunteer position of Program Manager for our “Language Digitization Initiative”. This initiative aims to enable digital support for all the world’s languages to ensure all linguists, languages, and cultures participate fully on the internet. The team has several ongoing projects, including creating resources, training material, tools, courses, and communities of practice among indigenous peoples, academic researchers, and professors. The Language Digitization Initiative is supported by a growing team of Program Managers, all working in multiple projects and ensuring a smooth and synchronized delivery of resources. This is a great opportunity to contribute to an international volunteer organization and to share your expertise. This is a volunteer and remote opportunity. Through this position, you will be the TC liaison to specific projects, working with experts and communities to understand their requirements, gather relevant information, and streamline processes. This role will also help you pursue careers in program and project management.
Key Responsibilities
- Organize the many projects within the Language Digitization Initiative.
- Liaise with our Advisors and Experts.
- Share progress and news with other Translation Commons teams.
- Work as a coordinator and liaison between experts, communities, and TC to define and understand stakeholder requirements within the program.
- Be the central point of contact for all experts and contributors within the program.
- Be ultimately responsible for the deliverables produced by the program.
- Delegate tasks to ensure the functioning of the program.
- Lead meetings and coordinate meetings.
- Work with group advisors to develop and improve frameworks and communication channels for different processes within the program.
- Act as the owner on all documentation related to the program.
- Share updates, challenges, and needs with the Program Management Group Managers.
- Manage diverse project responsibilities, which may include virtual online event organization, writing and social media, or technical documentation working with experts.
- Participate in teams that meet weekly or bi-weekly.
Desired Skills and Experience
- Experience in program and project management.
- Strong coordination and liaison skills.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to lead meetings.
- A forward-thinking mindset and the ability to take initiative to develop new goals.
- Ability to identify problems and to use creativity and initiative to solve them.
- Adequate technical skills for G-suite collaboration.
- A visionary outlook of the group’s contribution to TC’s mission.
- A weekly commitment of at least 5–10 hours per week is required (or a minimum of 5 hours).
